Pip value per standard lot is about $10 for most USD-quoted pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD) and gold. Adjust it for other instruments.

How to use the position size calculator

Position size is the lot size that keeps a losing trade equal to the risk you're willing to take. Enter your account balance, the percentage you'll risk on the trade (most consistent traders use 1–2%), and your stop-loss distance in pips. The calculator returns the exact number of lots to trade.

The formula is simple: your risk amount (balance × risk %) divided by your stop loss in pips × the pip value per lot. Getting this right is what stops one bad trade from ending a prop-firm challenge — where a hard drawdown limit means position sizing is everything.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate position size?

Position size = (account balance × risk %) ÷ (stop loss in pips × pip value per lot). For example, risking 1% of a $10,000 account with a 20-pip stop and $10 pip value gives a 0.5 lot position.

What is a safe risk per trade?

Most consistent traders risk 1–2% of their account per trade, so a run of losses never wipes out the account. On a prop-firm challenge with a fixed drawdown limit, smaller risk per trade is safer.

What is pip value per lot?

Pip value is how much one pip is worth for a given position. For a standard lot (100,000 units) of a USD-quoted pair like EUR/USD, one pip is about $10. Use the pip value calculator to get the exact figure for other pairs.
